update: The Cat Litterbox Dilemma
The cat litterbox system has been working very well..so well in fact that the cats now open all of the cupboard doors in the house. 
One of our cats, Pixel, can most times be found sleeping in our hall cupboard while Mapi enjoys surprising us from within our pots and pans cupboard.
So overall, this project was a success. Next project, getting the cats to clean out their own litterboxes!
