Sounds like a good idea

Buying the 1996 Geo Metro with 190,000 miles for 1500$ sounds like a good idea at the time, but – when does it stop being a good idea. I’ve replaced the head gasket, the AC the water pump, most of the hoses, all of the belts, the radiator and this weekend I am going to need to replace the clutch because it started to slip a bit. All of that stuff adds up. I’ve been towed home 3 times now due to the car breaking down on the side of the road. Today I’m writing this from a Les Schwab waiting area while I am getting four new tires. Not by choice because one of the rear tires blew out on the way to work today.

All of that being said, I’ve put about 5,000 miles on the car since I bought it, and play to put 2,000 plus or minus a few hundred more on the car every month commuting to work. I figure by math a newer Prius would cost me about 3500$ a year to buy. The metro is at about 2500$ so far this year. The Metro will cost nothing next year to pay off, the Prius would cost another 3500$. If you look at the car as a long term investment even with all of the issues I have had so far this year it is a better deal price wise.

The added benefit with the metro, since I do all of the work, and I have had the motor all the way apart and replaced most of the wear parts, I know most everything there is to know about the car maintenance wise. The Prius would be a mystery to me maintenance wise and most likely out of the realm of my skill set to repair. One break down could double the annual cost of the car. At worst with the metro I go out and buy another one for 1500 and start driving it. At 1500$ I can buy 2 metros a year for the same price of the prius, and the metro gets better mileage then the Prius.

After writing it all out again, I think it is still a good idea to stick with the Metro. At this point I am being a bit stubborn with the thing due to all of the work I have put into it. Not going to give up on my little car. Besides with the new tires my car have about 20% less road noise.
